It's hard to believe this album was released in '97. It was way ahead of its time. Daft Punk's Homework album

Electronica fans should always hear where bands started and their progression between albums.

Because of new technology, this genre of music changes constantly Daft Punk.

Homework album is a blast - it's a party on its own! I enjoy it so much - always makes me want to dance or air drum!

This album is incredible... very fast, upbeat, crazy, and totally intoxicating!

Homework is by far the roughest sounding daft punk album, with the exception of alive 1997, in its entirety comparing the works of discovery and homework seem easy, and many make the assumption that homework is a "worse" album because it is not as polished as discovery.

This however is not true. Homework was daft punks beginning, its the big bang, its "the chronic", its the epicenter. What this album has over "discovery" is flavor, its not for the faint of heart, it has rough, violent sounds.

Its raw and uninviting sometimes, but it takes you into a world that transports you to a different realm of thinking.

The first time I listened to homework I hated it, slowly however it grows on you the like the sound of waves in the song "fresh" it means something to everyone and connects the listeners in someway. Daft Punk

That's really were homework prevails, it connects people, to something, someone - a memory, a time spent with others, good feelings - bad. Its that homework is so raw and uninviting that it opens emotions in people its harsh, and its difficult to first connect with but in the end it gives the listener and the music purveyor - a connection to a different world and that high of listening to your favorite album over and over again Daft Punk.

After rocking the suburbs with the infectious and persistent "Da Funk" (with its amusingly pointless Spike Jonze video), Gallic pranksters Daft Punk unleashed Homework, an album that combined everything good about house music with everything bad about French pop and changed the face of dance music in the process. The sound of production duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem is a raw and dirty collage of cheap drum machines (wired for maximum swing) welded to endless filtered loops and embellished with everything from guitars to talk-box vocals. The beats are lifted straight from the Chicago House textbook, but the simple bass lines and catchy hooks make a listenable pop song from what would normally be a stripped-down DJ tool. Uncompromising yet totally accessible

4 years ago, I was walking around the campus of Ohio State University and I went into a record shop. In the little headphones on the wall, this album was playing. I liked it and so I bought it. I play it at a few parties and everybody starts to like it--people are playing it at parties from their own copy. Now, 4 years later, I've listened to a lot of hardcore dance music and Daft Punk is still way up on top. Reviews describe it as low-tech but good. I describe it as a record that had more thought put into it than 99% of others I've heard. It's intense. I recommend it all the time. Listen close, you'll probably hear it mixed in to the music at the techno clubs where you live. "Oh Yeah" is the worst song I've ever heard though.

Unfortunately, if you want the complete soundtrack (legally) you have to import the more expensive 2-CD album and the only way to get the other four missing bonus tracks is to purchase them from iTunes AND get the 8th track from Amazon and 9th track from Nokia so keep in mind that you are NOT getting all of the really great memorable music from the film on the single disc 22 track domestic album. It also does not include the two retro 80's songs "Separate Ways (World's Apart)" by Journey and the Eurythmic's "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" that were both featured in Flynn's Arcade.

As for the score itself, it's absolutely mind-blowing. Daft Punk have created a sonic masterpiece worthy of the legacy of Tron. Their brilliant layering of ambient electronica with orchestral symphonics is every bit as avant garde in creating atmospheric digital soundscapes as Wendy Carlos' score was for the original Tron. I only wish that they had incorporated some more of Wendy's memorable themes. You can kind of hear a few familiar notes that recalls Tron's theme in "Adagio For Tron" but that's pretty much the only hat tip to Wendy's vintage score. Like the film itself, Daft Punk have taken the music of Tron to a whole new aesthetic level by incorporating their unique style of techno synthpop along with their influences of electronic film composers like Vangelis on "Arrival" to the ominous Carpenter-esque "C.L.U." and synthesizing them with traditional orchestral composers like Bernard Hermann and Max Steiner.

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo demonstrate they have the musical talents to command the accompaniment of a full symphony orchestra and can score unforgettable music for blockbuster films. When I heard Daft Punk were scoring the film, I admit I initially had my doubts that they could pull it off but they have and by far their score for Tron Legacy is one of the best and most inspirationally thrilling movie soundtracks of the modern age and deserves a complete 2-disc release and not scattered all over the Grid.

Grammy award winning electronic duo Daft Punk - who takes music as seriously as TRON fans take computer references - is scoring the upcoming film TRON: Legacy. So I bought this album on iTunes (don't do it unless you got a gift card like I did, it's $7.99 there). Lemme just say, this album hits hard and sounds freaking amazing. Its not like other electronica, it's dirty and hard. The best songs are definitely "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" or "Rock 'n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain)." I'd say it was worth the $7.99 I paid for it so pick this up at $5.99 and crank up the volume.
EDIT: I've been listening to this a fair amount lately and I'd like to add that several of the other songs are good. I have taken a liking to "Scatta" as of late. Theres a mix of all sorts of music. "Scatta" is a rap song thrown in with the dubstep and electronica music. Some of it seems more rock but its all awesome.

This song is the greatest thing created by an unknown artist. With a easy dance beats and hard hitting, dubstep inspired break beats, this album is the best thing Skrillex has ever written. My favorites of the all them are Kill Everyone, which is just sweet because of the lyrics, and Scary Monsters And Nice Sprite (Noisia Remix), which is crazier, phater, and harder than the original.
This is one of the best albums of 2010.

Although not rising to the level of either of their previous production albums or their live record, Daft Punk's version of a remix album is far better than most of its ilk. But first off, agreeing to remix Daft Punk counts as an act of high hubris for most producers; the duo is responsible for some of the most innovative productions ("Musique," "Revolution 909," "Aerodynamic") and remixes ("Mothership Reconnection," "Disco Cubism," "Chord Memory") of recent years. But fresh blood is always intriguing, and the acts hired out to post-produce for 2001's Discovery LP were widely varied and highly talented. Basement Jaxx's version of "Phoenix" (the only track originally taken from Daft Punk's debut album) is a mostly successful translation of DP-style robot disco into Basement Jaxx's vision of sensual house. And although few of the other big names tapped turn in tracks that meet or exceed expectations, the gaps are filled in nicely by lesser-known French upstarts like Jess & Crabbe and Cosmo Vitelli as well as mainstream house mastermind Boris Dlugosch, whose "Digital Love" wisely changes very little of the original.

While I haven't seen the film yet (argh!), I pre-ordered the soundtrack months ago. As a HUGE Daft Punk fan, I'm constantly anticipating their next album, and hearing about them creating an orchestral collection was, at the least, intriguing.

Because I haven't seen the film yet, I imagine this particular song in some sort of scene where deep talking takes place, or something cathartic, or perhaps even the second song during the credits. If I'm right, the song sounds fitting; if not, the song is great anyway, and I highly recommend getting this track into your collection. As a song by itself, it rates fantastically; compared to the entire soundtrack, however, I give it a 4/5.

If you purchased the actual physical CD in the States, or downloaded it off iTunes, you won't have this track. This is an Amazon.com exclusive, and so you NEED to purchase it by itself or as a whole from Amazon.com. (At least as of December 2010.)

If you want to understand Bear Hands and their sound, ask singer and guitarist Dylan Rau with whom he'd like to share the stage.

"Lil Wayne and Bob Dylan and Daft Punk," the Burlington, Conn. native says.

That mishmash of hip-hop, songwriting and dance beats has made Bear Hands a fave on the indie rock scene. But though labels are courting the unsigned band and fans are equally passionate, Rau doesn't have delusions of grandeur.

"We did a whole tour in England where we were the first of five bands on a package bill. We played at 6:30 p.m. every night, and there would be five people in the room. No one cared at all — they had never heard of us," says Rau.

"But that's just something that happens. I wasn't expecting anything different when I went over there. What do you expect? To start off and headline Madison Square Garden?"

In fact, Rau, says, those poorly attended shows bring their own merit.

"I actually kind of dig it. Those kinds of room tend to loosen me up and make me more conscious of the freedom that you actually have on stage. There's not some formula for what you have to do up there — you just be yourself," he says.

"Or do something weird to freak people out," he adds with a laugh.

Though Rau and the rest of the band have moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., (except for guitarist and percussionist Ted Feldman, who's still a student at Wesleyan University), Rau says his upbringing can be found in the band's music.

" Connecticut is a very wealthy state and there's a really big gap between the rich and the poor there. It definitely made me an early leftist or some kind of young radical," he explains. "There's also a punk rock scene that's been there for a long time, so those two things kind of merged together. I'm sure that had some influence on making our songs sound punk."

Punk, and a handful of other genres. Their tunes range from subtly catchy slow ballads to head-banging and dance-inducing anthems. But all share the common bond of melody and creativity — with some heavy reverb, drum beats and lo-fi leanings.

Rau says the band has even more changes in store.

"We're using keyboards and other sounds to try to get away from the rock and roll cliches that people have. We've begun to play around with the computer and use it as a drum machine or a sampler, but we don't perform any songs using that yet. But it will happen," he says with a laugh.

Daft Punk Releases 1994-2008 years, Listen and Downloads

We've seen various people try and create their own versions of Daft Punk's famous helmets, but Casey Pugh looks to have done a better job than most.

He's now posted a time-lapse video of him building the helmet on the internet (he wore it as a Halloween costume this year), and this shows just how much work went into it.

"It's a 16x5 LED matrix installed inside a cheap motorcycle helmet I found on Amazon," explains Casey. "I used the Arduino [open-source electronics prototyping platform] to program all the animations.

"The LEDs are on cardboard, so I punched holes between every single LED and some larger slits around the sides in order to see out."

Tap Tap Dance iPhone Review

Activision or Electronic Arts plan on bringing out Guitar Hero pr Rock Band on the iPhone, they really should accelerate their respective schedules before Tapulous absolutely owns the rhythm genre with their series of Tap Tap music games. Tap Tap Dance is the firm's latest and it's the best rhythm game on the App Store. Featuring music from dance and techno artists like Junkie XL, Moby, Daft Punk, and the Chemical Brothers, Tap Tap Dance is the perfect solution for rhythm game fans that really just aren't that into Kansas or Boston. While Tap Tap Dance does not deviate from the formula of the previous games, such as the wildly successful freebie Tap Tap Revenge, it does feature a refreshed engine that allows for tapping two notes at the same time as if you were hitting a chord or holding a note down. Otherwise, Tapulous doesn't fix what isn't broken. You just need to tap the notes as they stream down the screen on three bars. When arrows appear on the bars, you swing the device that direction. (Fortunately, you can turn this off in the options screen. I have never liked this mechanic.) After hitting a 50-note streak, you shake the iPhone to start your "revenge," which enters an 8x bonus mode that lasts as you as you keep hitting those notes. Successfully deploying revenge is the difference between 90,000 points and 400,000.

Dance music is a perfect fit for the formula -- although I must confess up front that I am a monster fan of the genre. The selection of artists and their 10 songs here are fantastic, such as "Midnight Madness" by the Chemical Brothers and "Goldrush" by Tiesto. My only wish is that Tapulous had included some older techno or dance. Rhythm games have the unintended success of introducing new music to gamers (Guitar Hero stirred interest in classic rock within a lot of teenagers). To couch something like I Start Counting's "Lose Him" or Cabaret Voltaire's "I Want You" between the new stuff would be seven kinds of awesome.

The music sounds great through headphones, although if you are playing on an iPhone, the onboard speaker isn't too shabby. But what matters more here is the sensitivity of the controls and whether or not the notes line up well with the tracks. This isn't like Guitar Hero where the note placement is obvious. Whoever laid out the notes deserves a holiday bonus because you really do get into a groove with the music, tagging and holding notes along with the melody, rhythm, and sometimes both. The difficulty ramps up exceptionally well and with practice, you'll put up big scores. My advice: Don't stab your screen with your thumbs. It only takes a gentle tap (like in the title) to hit a note. Stomping on a note takes extra time that will trip you up in rapid note sequences.

At the end of each difficulty tier, you unlock a new song that's accompanied by art specific to the track. Daft Punk's "Technologic," for example, has an old-school TV screen that flashes images and the band's name as notes stream down bars that are much shorter and shaped differently than the main game screen. Moby's "Disco Lies" also uses short bars that unfurl from what looks like the mouth of an alien designed by a nine-year-old using MS Paint. (And that's not a slam to the artist -- I think it's very cool.) Once you finish a boss track, that song become parts of the track list on the next tier.

Exciting visuals are an essential for rhythm games, despite the fact that 90-percent of your attention is focused on listening to the music and tapping the notes at the bottom of the screen at the right times. Techno in particular has a visual element to it that is inseparable from the music. Since the early days of Kraftwerk, electronic music has been accompanied by vanguard digital art. Can you imagine "Electric Cafe" without those wire-frame heads? And so the barebones look of Tap Tap Revenge needed the refresh. The backdrop for most songs is a rave scene that vibrates as you nail note streaks. A disco ball splashes the screen with sparkling lights until the whole game looks like it's about to go nuclear.

Tap Tap Dance also includes a two-player mode where each players holds opposite ends of the iPhone. It's a clever addition, but I really don't see myself playing it much more than testing it for this review.

DJ Shadow Endtroducing

In 1998 I had a crush on a girl named Ellie. On a rainy day we decided on an awkward quasi-date to Rasputin's Records and Blondie's Pizza. I sat down in the passenger seat of her beat-up Accord, she started the engine, and her tape player introduced me to a twinkling piano and hypnotizingly slow breakbeats. The notes fell like raindrops on her windshield, and forever in my mind, that moment, Ellie's perfume, my nervous tension, and DJ Shadow's "Building Steam With A Grain of Salt" were locked inseparably together. Whenever the rain starts to fall -- not a hard rain and not a sprinkle, but a steady, plodding, relentless patter of water on earth -- I think of this song.

Josh Davis, also known as DJ Shadow, makes that kind of impact with the arcane record samples he artfully merges into cohesive, thoughtful, revelatory aural collages. He is obsessed. He digs up sounds you and I have never heard before, and maybe a thing or two we have heard before, and fuses them into some brilliant new heterogeneous dream with the power to stir the subconscious and induce sheer awe.

Once I bought his CD and broke free of the hold that "Building..." had on me, I got accustomed to the other twelve tracks of the album. There were many pleasant surprises. I found "Midnight in a Perfect World" just as addicting as the song that got me hooked in the first place, a loping, seductive, scratch-heavy, impossibly beautiful five minutes and two seconds. "Changeling" was another fast favorite, like a lush sunset after a long summer day. "Stem/Long Stem" creeped me out with pernicious string samples surrounding a single lonely chime. And although it took some time, "Mutual Slump" eventually won me over with its dual personality: crashing percussion and ugly guitar riffs on the one hand, and a mournful, echoing backdrop offset by a shy girl's spoken diary on the other.

Many have already mentioned what an impact this album had on a number of prominent artists such as Moby and Radiohead. DJ shadow's influence has reverberated for several years now in the music industry. But for me, I can only attest to what it did for me when seated next to an unreachable girl, in the midst of my quixotic quest, on a gray and rainwashed early spring afternoon.

It was nothing short of an epiphany.

DJ Shadow, a.k.a. Josh Davis, could be credited with bringing newfound introspection to the gloating sounds of hip-hop. Condensed with urban oscillations and scatological beats, Endtroducing shutters with eclectic samples and aural montages that reach beyond the constraints of hip-hop style. Enhancing the mix with fundamentals of rock, soul, funk, ambient, and jazz, the modern fusions fail to go unnoticed, even by the casual listener. While most of the tracks are compiled by layering samples from vinyl treasures found in used-record bins, the production quality of the mosaic is unmatched. Darkened melodies carry throughout the album with its eye on the end of the tunnel. The narration samples come from numerous sources and keep the listener involved and waiting for resolution. With a message as fragmentary as an overheard conversation, Endtroducing conveys no apparent conclusion, but begs the mind, body, and soul for some rewind.

This is a great DVD that utilizes almost every special feature that DVDs have over all other media formats. You get the videos for "Da Funk," "Around the World," "Burnin'," "Revolution 909" and "Fresh" including audio commentary, storyboards, and making-of segments.

Here's what i thought was the best part of the package - "Rollin' & Scratchin'" Live in LA (Dec '97) where you can use the angle function to choose between 8 different camera positions! All in all, a great package at a fantastic price. Hopefully other electronic artists - Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, Chemical Brothers - will see the path that this compilation has laid down, hurry up, and put out their own disc.

Why only 4 stars? 5.1 sound would have been nice, and c'mon - let's be objective, they're music videos, it's not _Citizen Kane_ or _2001_... One more good note - unlike the other French-duo with a DVD, there's no pretentious and boring 40-minute documentary!

Daft Punk Discovery

Now this is interesting. Apparently these guys have been famous for quite a while, yet somehow I'd never heard of them. All that was remedied recently though. When I heard that Leiji Matsumoto had created a full-length animated feature with stunning animation based on an ablum by Daft Punk, I just had to check it out. While my opinion of that excellent piece of animation is mixed (I just didn't dig the story or think most of it matched the songs all that well), it did something to me. It made me buy the album it was based on "Discovery". Wow.

In this case, it seemed more like the music video was just a distraction than an extension of the music. When I first started listening to the album I thought it was okay, but as I progressed through it, listening to the songs in order, and then repeating some just to hear them one more time, I got HOOKED.

It's hard to describe. I love electronic music and techno and all that sort of thing, but this is different. The voices and music are all really just toyed with by the musical artists in these songs. Everything is just a way to get you into a feeling, of a rhythm, or a beat. The more you hear the songs, they more they grow on you, the more you get into them, the more you like them, the more you listen to them.

Take that song "One more time". That song is downright addictive! The beat is so infectious that I found I absolutely had to move to the song while I was listening to it. Ditto for the next three tracks. "Aerodynamic" is amazing because it uses electric guitar like a piano player uses his keyboard, not just for show, but to extend and play with a melody, finally turning it into a music-box version of itself before transforming into my favorite song on the album "Digital Love". I love that song. It's just so incredibly upbeat, happy, and beautiful. I love that song. A lot of people really love the next one, "Harder, better, faster, stronger". I didn't care for it at first, but it grows on you, to the point where I love it too now. My other favorite tracks include "Nightvision", "Superheroes" (why do I actually think of comic book superheroes when I hear that song?), and "Voyager".

This may be an acquired taste, but it's definitely a taste I'm glad I acquired. If you dig electronic music in general you should check it out. Just keep an open mind. This more than just more of the same repetitive techno/electronica you've heard. This is beautiful, original, and unique music. Great stuff. Give it a try.

Daft Punk Human After All

I noticed quite a few reviewers claim this album is too repetitive. Our French androids' last record, "Discovery," was a very fun and poppy collection of songs that made you just want to dance and have a good time. This new record is less danceable perhaps, and it's certainly not something you can sing along to, but this album has a certain beauty that puts you in a completely different state of mind. That has always been the magic of Daft Punk.

The music is harder, darker, and filled with a broader range of emotion than Daft Punk has previously expressed. The opening track, "Human After All," becomes progressively more tense and seems to speak of a desperate search for identity in a cold world where technology is dehumanizing us, and I would call it my favorite Daft Punk song of all time. This theme continues into tracks like "Television Rules The Nation." There are some dancey, active tracks as well, such as "Robot Rock" and the better known "Technologic" that flows like a well-oiled machine. Tracks such as "Steam Machine" and "The Brainwasher" are harsh and busy like faceless cities where people are all plugged into their electronics and completely disconnected from what they were born with inside. Then there are soft songs that surprised me, "Make Love" and "Emotion." These are dream-like melodies that remind one of simple times, simples touches, simple connections, memories that bring us hope on lonely nights while also reminding us that we are imperfect and in need of love.

"Human After All" is not something you can play at a party. It is something you can zone out on, something that can put you in another world. It is something to listen to while you are drawing or writing, while driving alone at night, while staring up at your ceiling in your room and wondering if you're the only person alive. It is a powerful, introverted, emotional work and deserves another listen or two before you throw it back on the shelf.

You'd never guess from Human After All that these are the same guys who came up with the opulent dance grooves of 2001's Discovery. On Human After All it sounds like Daft Punk's robotic alter egos have finally gotten the upper hand and made an album that is defiantly free of emotion and personality. Instead, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo amp up the irony and deliver a set of songs that are maddeningly repetitive, raucous and bound to test the most devoted fan's patience. But even as the French duo short-circuits it manages to captivate--the spoken-word "Technologic" and the digitized "The Prime Of Your Life" are just bananas enough to make its euphoric hit "One More Time" sound positively last century

Musique, Vol. 1: 1993-2005

To me, Daft Punk represents the best in electronic/house music. For novices this is a great way to get into a band that I feel is often overlooked. Perhaps because electronic music nowadays isn't really being listened to that much. Back in the mid to late 90's electronic music acts such as Daft Punk, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and Basement Jaxx were flying high because the music was in style, today it's sort of an acquired taste. Given most of these bands material of late isn't up to par, including Daft Punk themselves. Before 'Human After All' came out I honestly didn't think these guys were capable of making a less than stellar album. I was proven wrong.

For all the backlash 'Human After All' gets it's not by any means terrible, but just simply not as good as Homework and Discovery. However, the sound of a dwindling fanbase must've been deafening to the record label. So the time was right to release this 'best of' compilation in order to reel in new fans since the "old" ones probably have gone off to greener pastures ( i.e. LCD Soundsystem). We get introduced to a lost classic from the earliest stage of the band, Musique, a b-side to the first single 'Da Funk' and a pleasant surprise to those who haven't heard it. The next batch of songs are very familiar to fans and somewhat to fairweather fans, now my only gripe is something I noticed others have had a similar complaint about, and that is "why isn't Digital Love and Aerodynamic included?". Now those two tracks were singles and to me the fact that those are not there takes away one star from this rating. Since you want to give novices a chance to get the "best of" of a band, you must put in the "best tracks", makes sense right? I would've taken out Human After All and Something About Us, basically because the quality of the previous tracks outweigh these. A nice addition is the inclusion of three remixes from the Daft Club release, good choices too. Overall, you have pretty much the meat and potatoes of an excellent group that deserves better recognition and this proves why.

Daft Punk - Interstella 5555

The animation is cool but I think you REALLY REALLY have to like Daft Punk to be able to watch this. I really really like Daft Punk so this was a no brainer for me. The music goes surprisingly well with every scene. The movie plays the Discovery album in the same order. The animators and story creator did a great job of basing it around the music.

If you like anime though you just might end up liking Daft Punk after watching this.

I tried getting my friends together to watch this and half of them were pretty bored since they didn't really like Daft Punk.

Daft Punk Homework

I remember first seeing the music videos for "Da Funk" and "Around the World" on MTV (believe it or not) several years ago and just being completely blown away by the infectious dance beats. "Around the World" in particular really grabbed me by the jugular. It is by far the catchiest dance song I have heard in the past decade, next to Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head". The bass-heavy beat is incredible. Listening to "Around the World" brings back memories of me dancing (drunkenly) to this song in the nightclubs back in my college days. "Da Funk" was and still is equally cool in its own right. It is extremely catchy. I just love the synthesized beats. Just like "Around the World", "Da Funk" has that incredible deep bass hook that gets you on the dancefloor. As much as I love Daft Punk's follow up "Discovery", "Homework" has to be my favorite of the two cds. Granted that "Homework" lacks the warmth of "Discovery", "Homework" has a raw, live feel that its predecessor lacked. "Revolution 909" reminds me of something I have heard during my journeys to Chicago back in the day and my friends and I would be cruising to our favorite nightclub with the radio cranked up, and this song would be on the airwaves (more like a song with the same beat). I also love the shimmering techno track "Indo Silver Club" as well. Despite being seven years old, "Homework" still holds up to this very day which is not an easy task to do because trends comes and goes in dance music but "Homework" is an exception to that rule and it still sounds fresh and new to me.

After rocking the suburbs with the infectious and persistent "Da Funk" (with its amusingly pointless Spike Jonze video), Gallic pranksters Daft Punk unleashed Homework, an album that combined everything good about house music with everything bad about French pop and changed the face of dance music in the process. The sound of production duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem is a raw and dirty collage of cheap drum machines (wired for maximum swing) welded to endless filtered loops and embellished with everything from guitars to talk-box vocals. The beats are lifted straight from the Chicago House textbook, but the simple bass lines and catchy hooks make a listenable pop song from what would normally be a stripped-down DJ tool. Uncompromising yet totally accessible.

WOW! this is some good stuff! Now before you say, "but it..." - Let me say that, yes, it is total cheese at times. And yes, it is heavy on the vocoder effects and disco beats, but, let me tell you, it still packs a huge enjoyable wallop! I dare anyone not to move their respective behinds to most of the tunes on Discovery. It just won't let you stay still.

As always, the production is completely out of sight! Smooth one minute and quite funky the next, Discovery has few weak moments, if any. Buy it and...get down, get down, (horns) get down, get down.

The French twosome behind Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo, get away with an awful lot. They go around impersonating aliens and robots in their interviews, they put records out only once every three years, and they make music that evokes a million other artists--while not really sounding like any of them. The keyboard noodlings of Jean-Michel Jarre are in there somewhere, along with the otherworldly imagery and giant hooks of '70s rock icons like Boston or even Electric Light Orchestra.

There are dashes of 1999-era Prince and oodles of new wave and disco cheese, from Harold Faltermeyer and Gary Numan to the Bee Gees, all set off with efficient house beats. So how have they managed to position themselves as electronic music's next great crossover artists? On Discovery, the follow-up to the 1998 worldwide smash Homework, the answer is obvious: they have no shame, and they know how to make us dance.

Starting off with the irresistibly hummable "One More Time," the record blows through a head-spinning array of styles and samples, creating a pop-culture stew of funky loops and dance-floor anthems. "Aerodynamic" eschews breakbeats for an Yngwie Malmsteen-ish guitar interlude that somehow ends up meshing in a crazy blend of stomping bass lines and hyped-up harmonics.

"Digital Love" starts off silly and gets sillier, but the monosyllabic lyrics lull the senses just right, allowing the song's summery groove to grab hold with authority. "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is a resounding standout amidst the retro/Vocoder deluge that transpired after Cher's Believe turned the kitchy disco device into a worldwide pop music trend, spinning a clever groove around an ever-escalating string of computerized seduction. Everywhere on the record, gigantic beats are dropped with pinpoint precision, giving songs a momentum that transforms repetitive melodies into sudden revelations.

The record's only misstep, the aptly named "Short Circuit" utilizes a keyboard riff that is nails-on-a-chalkboard awful, but it can't keep this from being one of the best records of
2001.

In the wake of their 2007 international tour, Daft Punk releases "Alive 2007, a live recording of their performance in Paris. I can honestly say that, despite rarely finding time these days to listen to techo-style music, listening to this album was a thrilling experience. From what I've read, actually being at one of their concerts was downright incredible. In any case, for those of us who probably wouldn't know what to do with ourselves at a Daft Punk performance, we do have this sensational release. Close your eyes and get ready for the quintessential house/electronica mind journey.

For fans of brazen electronic music, few acts offer the longevity, consistency, and booty-shakin' insistence of Daft Punk. In a kind of tenth anniversary celebration of the Parisian duo's limited-edition live album Alive 1997, Alive 2007 captures a long and sweaty concert performed before 18,000 hometown fans.

There's almost nothing by way of original material here, though the performance culls all of Daft Punk's many notable singles from their uncompromising debut, Homework, the merciless Human After All; and the opulent, seminal Discovery (including lead single "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," which garnered renewed fame as the predominant sample buoying "Stronger," from rapper Kanye West's third album, Graduation).

Regardless, devoted Parisians had weathered a full decade without a live performance, and the ecstatic, roof-raising release captured in this recording testifies to Daft Punk's inimitable position as one of the world's top electro-house phenomena.

More importantly, perhaps, by fusing two or more "songs" per "track," Alive 2007 pulls off what 2003's remix/rarities album, "Daft Club," could not: namely, mixing the band's back catalogue with the kinetic fervor it deserves. At the end of the day (or the decade), no one does Daft Punk like Daft Punk.

History

The name Daft Punk was inspired by a review in the British music magazine Melody Maker, which dubbed their first collaboration, the Beach Boys-inspired guitar group Darlin', "a bunch of daft punk." Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo would later abandon this indie rock setup (which included member Laurent Brancowitz) in favor of drum machines and synthesizers. In 1993 Daft Punk sent a demo to Scotland-based label Soma Recordings that formed the basis for their debut single "The New Wave", a limited release in 1994.

Their first commercially successful single "Da Funk" came the following year, and was later included on their 1997 debut album Homework. The album was regarded as an innovative synthesis of techno, house, acid house and electro styles, and is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential dance music albums of the nineties. "Around the World" was the most successful single from Homework, known for its hypnotic chant of the song's title and distinctive music video directed by Michel Gondry.

2001's Discovery took on a slicker and distinctly synth-pop oriented style, initially stunning fans of their previous work. The album reached #2 in the UK, and its single "One More Time" was a major club hit, creating a new generation of fans mainly familiar with the sophomore Daft Punk release. The singles "Digital Love" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" were also very successful in the UK and on the US dance chart, and "Face to Face" hit #1 on the US club play charts despite a limited single release.

In an interview with Remix Magazine Online, the group said that the album was conceived as an attempt to re-connect with a playful, open minded attitude associated with the discovery phase of childhood. This accounts for the heavy use of themes and samples from the late '70s to early '80s era on the album. Interestingly enough, more than two tracks had unacknowledged samples. A live album containing a 45-minute set from the Daftendirekt tour recorded in Birmingham in 1997 was also released in 2001, entitled Alive 1997.

In 2005, Human After All was released, a 10-track album running 45 minutes and recorded in a mere 6 weeks. Reviews were mixed, mostly citing its short length, overly repetitive nature and seemingly rushed recording. They also noted the fact that it had only nine proper tracks and one interlude. The singles off this album were "Robot Rock", "Technologic", "Human After All" and "The Prime Time of Your Life". The earliest official statement from Daft Punk concerning the album was "we believe that Human After All speaks for itself".

A Daft Punk greatest hits CD/DVD collection entitled Musique Vol. 1 1993-2005 was released on April 4, 2006. It contains new videos for "The Prime Time of Your Life" and "Robot Rock (Maximum Overdrive)".

On May 22, 2006, Daft Punk premiered their first directed film, Electroma at the Cannes Film Festival sidebar Director's Fortnight. The film does not include their own music which is a first for the duo considering their previous DVD and film releases (D.A.F.T. for Homework and Interstella 5555 for Discovery). It is currently unknown whether the film will be released on DVD.

Use of visual components

Daft Punk are noted for their use of visual components associated with their musical productions. The music videos for their singles from Homework featured memorable characters and were directed by cult video producers, including Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry. The album Discovery subsequently became the soundtrack to the anime film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, which the group co-produced with Leiji Matsumoto. Many US fans were introduced to Daft Punk through a special presentation of their videos during Cartoon Network's Toonami block on August 31, 2001.

During their publicity photo shoots, interviews, live shows and music videos, both members wear elaborate robot costumes. Their outward personae have changed over the years. During their Homework years, the duo would usually wear masks to hide their appearance. [1] In their more visible Discovery years, and ever since, they have appeared as futuristic robots, sporting remarkably complicated helmets capable of various LED effects and metallic finger gloves. "We did not choose to become robots," Bangalter once explained. "There was an accident in our studio. We were working on our sampler, and at exactly 9:09 a.m. on September 9, 1999, it exploded. When we regained consciousness, we discovered that we had become robots." With the release of Human After All, the musical duo's outfits became slightly less complicated, consisting of simplified versions of the Discovery helmets, and black, leather jumpsuits. Very few photos of the faces of the duo exist, although a blurry one can be found in Homework's liner notes. The mystery of their identity and the elaborate nature of their disguises has added to their international popularity.
